Who was Ian Holm? / Facts

    His father was a psychiatrist who worked as the superintendent of the West Ham Corporation Mental Hospital and was one of the pioneers of electric shock therapy. His mother was a nurse.
    He had an older brother, who died when Ian was 12 years old.
  • Education - Holm was educated at the independent Chigwell School in Essex.
    His parents retired to Mortehoe in Devon and then to Worthing, where he joined an amateur dramatic society.
    A chance encounter with Henry Baynton, a well-known provincial Shakespearean actor, helped Holm train for admission to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1950.
    His studies there were interrupted a year later when he was called up for National Service in the British Army, during which he was posted to Klagenfurt, Austria, and attained the rank of Lance Corporal.
    They were then interrupted a second time when he volunteered to go on an acting tour of the United States in 1952.
    Holm graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1953.

  • Stage debut - He made his stage debut in 1954, at Stratford-upon-Avon, playing a spear-carrier in a staging of Othello.
    Two years later, he made his London stage debut in Love Affair.

  • Film debut - Holm made his film debut in 1968 in Jack Gold's The Bofors Gun, set in Germany after the Second World War.
    He played a British soldier whose life is threatened by a drunken Irish gunner, and won a Bafta for Best Supporting Actor.

  • Career - His well-known film roles include Ash in Alien, Father Vito Cornelius in The Fifth Element, Chef Skinner in Ratatouille, and Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film series.

    • to Lynn Mary Shaw in 1955 (dissolved 1965);

    • to Sophie Baker in 1982 (dissolved 1986);

    • to actress Penelope Wilton, in Wiltshire, in 1991 (dissolved 2002);

    He has only returned three times since then.
    When he played Frodo in the BBC radio dramatization of The Lord of the Rings, he was 50 years old, the same age Frodo is when he begins his quest to destroy the One Ring.

 Quotes

[on his Hobbit feet in the Lord of the Rings films] These things are like boats with toes.
While shooting in Mexico, all conversation was dominated by bowels. During filming, if you'll pardon the expression, you're frightened to fart.
I've always been a minimalist. It was Bogart [Humphrey Bogart] who once said, "If you think the right thoughts, the camera will pick it up." The most important thing in the face is the eyes, and if you can make the eyes talk, you're halfway there.
