What is the European Golden Boot? Is it the same with FIFA Ballon d’Or?

Ballon d’Or in French is the same title with Golden Ball.

The Winner of Ballon d’Or is in fact the football player of the year – it is voted by journalists all over the world now, compared to european journalists, as it was before. Only European footballers were voted before but now football players from all around the world can win it. As this award was merged with FIFA World Player of the Year, now it’s called FIFA Ballon d’Or.

Some of the most notorious Ballon d’Or winners of all time:

  • Michel Platini (1983, 1984, 1985)
  • Marco van Basten (1988, 1989, 1992)
  • Franz Beckenbauer (1972, 1976)
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (2008)
  • Zinedine Zidane (1998)
  • Lionel Messi (2007, 2008, 2009, 2015)
  • Ruud Gullit (1987)
  • Ronaldinho (2005)
  • Roberto Baggio (1993)
  • Lothar Matthäus (1990)

Golden Boot will be won by Antoine Griezmann, with 6 goals, 2 assists and 555 minutes played at Euro 2016.

According to UEFA site, these are the favourites to the Golden Boot Award:

The European Boot or Shoe is given to the goalscorer in all European leagues that season.
