Who was Robert Conrad? / Facts

  • Childhood and early life - His ancestry included German and Irish. His father, Leonard Henry Falk, of German descent, was 16 years old, when Robert was born. His mother, Alice Jacqueline Hartman was 15 years old when she gave birth, and named her son after her father. She became the first publicity director of Mercury Records, where she was known as Jackie Smith. She married twice, including once to Chicago radio personality Eddie Hubbard in 1948. Eddie Hubbard and Jackie Smith reportedly had a child together (born in 1949) before splitting up in 1958.
Conrad was a star football and basketball player in middle school and high school.
He lied to get a job when he was 17. He had eloped with a lawyer's daughter, who was attending a religious boarding school. The only place he could think of where a kid his age could get decent wages was the loading docks in Chicago.
He told them he was 21 and made $1.87 an hour--$74.40 a week. When Conrad eloped, he and his wife lived under the assumed name "Robert Conrad" so their parents wouldn't find them.
They only told their parents where they were in May of 1952, when his wife found out she was having a baby. They were thrilled because they figured it would be too late for their parents to annul the marriage.
  • Education - Conrad attended Chicago schools including South Shore High School, Hyde Park High School, the YMCA Central School, and New Trier High School. He dropped out at age 15 to live on his own and begin working full time, including jobs loading trucks for Consolidated Freightways and Eastern Freightways, driving a milk delivery truck for Chicago's Bowman Dairy, and singing in a Chicago cabaret. After working in Chicago for several years and studying theater arts at Northwestern University, he pursued an acting career.
  • Acting career start - Conrad befriended up-and-coming actor Nick Adams during this period, and it was Adams who helped Conrad get his first Hollywood work in 1957. One of his first paying roles was a week-long job posing outside a Chicago theater where the film Giant (1956) was being screened. Conrad bore a resemblance to the film's lead, actor James Dean, so his mother used her entertainment industry contacts to help him get the part, which was intended as a publicity stunt to boost attendance at the theater.
Conrad also studied singing; his vocal coach was Dick Marx, the father of singer Richard Marx.
  • Television - He was cast as detective Tom Lopaka and appeared in 104 episodes of the weekly adventure series Hawaiian Eye (1959). Conrad also played frontier secret agent James West in 104 episodes of The Wild Wild West (1965),where he did most of his own stunt work, resulting in several injuries during the course of the show.
Conrad found ratings success again from 1976 to 1978 as legendary tough-guy World War II fighter ace Pappy Boyington in Baa Baa Black Sheep, retitled for its second season and in later syndication as Black Sheep Squadron. He directed 3 episodes. The show's success led Conrad to win a People's Choice Award for Favorite Male Actor and a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. He followed it with a lead part in the television miniseries Centennial (1978).
Conrad has enjoyed success as a commercial spokesman and in the role of G. Gordon Liddy (whom the actor admired) in the 1982 TV movie Will: The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy (1982).
Conrad spent most of the 1980s starring in TV movies.
As virile and athletic as ever in the 1990s, Conrad has continued to appear in action roles both on TV and in films.
He appeared in the popular music video for Richard Marx's Hazard, which was a #1 hit in 13 countries, including the United States. He had a supporting role in Jingle All the Way (1996) with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
  • Radio - Beginning in 2008, he hosted a weekly two-hour national radio show (The PM Show with Robert Conrad) on CRN Digital Talk Radio, and could be counted upon to show up at a moment's notice as a guest on the various all-night programs of Chicago radio personality Eddie Schwartz. .
  • Personal life - Conrad and his first wife Joan were married for 25 years until an amicable divorce. The couple had 5 children. His had 3 children from his second marriage to LaVelda Ione Fann. They met when he emceed the Miss National Teenager Pageant, which she won. Conrad was joined on some television shows by his sons, Shane and Christian, and his daughter, Nancy. Another daughter, Joan, became a television producer. In a 2008 interview, Conrad described Chicago burglar Michael Spilotro as his "best friend." Spilotro's slaying was featured in the movie Casino.
  • Awards - In 1984, Conrad was awarded a star on the Walk of Western Stars in Newhall, California.

You name it, we had it. It won't happen again. You're not going to duplicate this show.

We can't protect you. We can't protect your identity. We're left with picking up the pieces after it's been stolen.

It was just so elaborate and so luxurious. We had every gadget imaginable. You know, I had the little gun that came out, and I had the little gun in the heel of the shoe.

There's a gray area there that I'm satisfied is not gray.
