Who was Lee Harvey Oswald? / Facts

  • Early life and family - Oswald was born at the old French Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana to Robert Edward Lee Oswald Sr. and Marguerite Frances Claverie.
He never knew his father, Robert Edward Lee Oswald, who had died 2 months before his birth of a heart attack.
Oswald had one older full brother and another half-brother (from his mother's first marriage).
  • Education - Oswald grew up in New Orleans, Dallas and briefly New York City, where he attended school in The Bronx.
He was placed in a Lutheran orphanage at the age of 3, but he was removed when his mother left for Dallas in January 1944 and married her 3rd husband Edwin A. Ekdahl.
Oswald a voracious reader and declared himself a Marxist by the age of 15.
    He left school in 1954.
  • Personality disorders - At age 13, Oswald had a psychiatric assessment, being diagnosed as having a 'personality pattern disturbance with schizoid features and passive-aggressive tendencies'.
  • Military career - Oswald dropped out of high school and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on October 24, 1956.
He was in the US Marines until 1959, when he was discharged due to hardship as his mother was suffering from physical problems.
  • Defection to the Soviet Union - Oswald was interested in Marxist ideologies and lived for some time in the USSR (1959-1962).
He unsuccessfully tried to get Soviet citizenship.
When he was initially denied and as his visa was about to expire he even attempted suicide.
In 1961, Oswald married a Russian woman, Marina Nikolaevna Prusakova, and was allowed to stay indefinitely.
  • Personal life - During his stay in the Soviet Union (1959-1961), Oswald briefly dated several women, and had a longer one-year relationship with his co-worker Ella German, before meeting and marring Marina Nikolayevna Prusakova, with whom he had 2 children: June Lee Oswald and Audrey Marina Rachel Oswald.
  • Return to the U.S. - By October 1963, he moved along with his wife and daughter back to the States, and settled in Dallas.
  • Political views - Oswald began to publicly express his opinions about Communist regimes like Cuba (being pro-Fidel Castro) and China by distributing pamphlets.
  • Early crimes - Oswald attempted to kill retired U.S. Major General Edwin Walker (an outspoken anti-communist, segregationist, and member of the John Birch Society ) on April 10, 1963, by firing a Carcano rifle at Walker through a window from less than 100 feet (30 m) away as Walker sat at a desk in his Dallas home.
The bullet struck the window-frame and Walker's only injuries were bullet fragments to the forearm.
Marina Oswald testified that her husband told her that he traveled by bus to General Walker's house and shot at Walker with his rifle, considering Walker to be the leader of a 'fascist organization'.
Before the Kennedy assassination, Dallas police had no suspects in the Walker shooting, but Oswald's involvement was suspected as being "extremely likely" within hours of his arrest following the assassination.
  • Work - He had multiple jobs on his return to the U.S., but after a short while was always being fired for various motives.
Oswald's last job was for the Texas School Depository, a six-story building located in the now 'infamous' Dealey Plaza area of Dallas, Texas, where he worked for less than 2 months.
  • Assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy - On November 22, 1963, President Kennedy's motorcade passed by the building where it is believed that Oswald was in.
He might have shot the president from the 6th floor and then concealed the rifle behind some crates.
Whether he acted alone or not is still an ongoing debate.
Oswald apparently left the depository when chaos broke out after the shooting.
He then headed home where he picked up a pistol.
Oswald returned to the Depository, where he is believed to have fired 4 bullets into police officer J.D. Tippit, who approached him to ask him a question.
  •  Arrest at the Texas Theatre - Oswald then ran into the Texas Theatre where the double bill War Is Hell (1961) and Cry of Battle (1963) was playing.
He hadn't bought a ticket and the authorities cornered him in the theatre and quickly took him into custody.
  • Legal charges - On 23 November 1963, he was charged with the murder of President John F. Kennedy, whom he was alleged to have shot from the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository, as the President passed by in a motor cavalcade.
Oswald however vehemently denied his involvement in both the Kennedy assassination and the shooting of officer Tippit.
  • Murder - On November 24, 1963 just 2 days later, while authorities were transferring Oswald to the county jail, he was shot dead by night club owner Jack Ruby (1911-1967), live before the cameras.
Ruby claimed he was avenging Jacqueline Kennedy (Jackie Kennedy Onassis).
Claims were made that Oswald had links with the US secret service and with the Mafia.
There are more conspiracy theories about that.
  • Funeral - His funeral took place on the same day as John F. Kennedy and police officer J.D. Tippit.
His funeral time, date, and location were kept a closely-guarded secret during its preparations in order to keep crashers away.
To further insure that it would not be disturbed, Oswald's funeral was held at the same time as JFK's because the family and those at the funeral parlor knew that at that time everyone would be attending the president's funeral. Such was the outrage at Oswald, Oswald's brother could not get a minister to conduct the funeral.
  • Trivia - His training in the Russian language made him so fluent that his future wife, Marina, reportedly thought that he was a Russian.
His death was the first murder ever shown on national television.

And that is my definition of democracy, the right to be in a minority and not be suppressed.

I am a communist and a worker, and I have lived in a decadent capitalist society where the workers are slaves.

As my Russian improves, I become increasingly conscious of just what sort of a society I live in.
I always felt that the Cubans were being pushed into the Soviet Bloc by American policy.
Americans are so spoiled. They think you always have to have a car, whereas I got away on my own two feet.
I hear they burn for murder. Well, they say it just takes a second to die.
Revolutions require work, revolutions require sacrifice, revolutions, and our own included, require a certain amount of rationing, a certain amount of calluses, a certain amount of sacrifice.
We do not support the man. We do not support the individual. We support the idea of independent revolution in the Western Hemisphere, free from American intervention.
They have found absolutely nothing to connect us with the Communist Party of the United States. In regards to your question about whether I myself am a communist, as I said I do not belong to any other organization.
I don't know why you are treating me like this. The only thing I have done is carry a pistol into a movie.
