Early life - Born to countercultural parents in San Francisco, Love had an itinerant childhood, but was primarily raised in Portland, Oregon, where she played in a series of short-lived bands and was active in the local punk scene.
She was first child of psychotherapist Linda Carroll, and Hank Harrison, a publisher and road manager for the Grateful Dead.
Love is of Cuban, English, German, Irish, and Welsh descent.
Her mother, who was adopted at birth and raised by a prominent Italian-Catholic family in San Francisco, was later revealed to be the biological daughter of novelist Paula Fox.
Love's maternal great-grandmother was screenwriter Elsie Fox.
At age six, in 1970, her parents divorced, and later her mother remarried, giving birth to two daughters and one son, who died of a heart defect. The family later adopted a boy.

Education - Love attended a Montessori school in Eugene, where she struggled academically and socially.

Legal Troubles - In 1995, Courtney was charged with assault for punching musician Kathleen Hanna at Lollapalooza, and she was arrested for disrupting flights in 1995 and 2003, resulting in Love being banned from Virgin Airlines.
Also in 2003, she was arrested for breaking windows at boyfriend James Barber's house while under the influence of drugs, and she was arrested for hitting a fan with a microphone stand during a 2004 concert.
In 2018, she was sued by Isaiah Silva, her daughter's ex-husband, for allegedly ordering his kidnapping and attempted murder.

Personal life - Love's marriage to James Moreland in 1989 (vocalist of The Leaving Trains) was brief, ending in an annulment.
