Who is Courtney Love? / Facts

  • Early life - Born to countercultural parents in San Francisco, Love had an itinerant childhood, but was primarily raised in Portland, Oregon, where she played in a series of short-lived bands and was active in the local punk scene.
She was first child of psychotherapist Linda Carroll, and Hank Harrison, a publisher and road manager for the Grateful Dead.
Love is of Cuban, English, German, Irish, and Welsh descent.
Her mother, who was adopted at birth and raised by a prominent Italian-Catholic family in San Francisco, was later revealed to be the biological daughter of novelist Paula Fox.
Love's maternal great-grandmother was screenwriter Elsie Fox.
At age six, in 1970, her parents divorced, and later her mother remarried, giving birth to two daughters and one son, who died of a heart defect. The family later adopted a boy.

  • Education - Love attended a Montessori school in Eugene, where she struggled academically and socially.
At age nine, a psychologist noted that she exhibited signs of autism.
After her mother remarried for the third time in 1972, the family moved to Nelson, New Zealand.
There, Love was enrolled at Nelson College for Girls, but she was soon expelled for misbehavior.
In 1973, Carroll sent Love back to Portland, Oregon to be raised by her former stepfather.
After briefly being in a juvenile hall, being arrested for shoplifting, she then was intermittently placed in foster care throughout late 1979 until becoming legally emancipated in 1980.
Love spent a year living in Dublin and Liverpool before returning to the United States and pursuing an acting career.
Deciding to shift her focus to acting, Love enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute, then took experimental theater courses in Oakland taught by Whoopi Goldberg.

  • Rise to fame - She rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Hole, which she formed in 1989.
Love has drawn public attention for her uninhibited live performances and confrontational lyrics, as well as her highly publicized personal life following her marriage to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

  • Career - She appeared in supporting roles in the Alex Cox films Sid and Nancy (1986) and Straight to Hell (1987), before forming the band Hole in Los Angeles with guitarist Eric Erlandson.
The group received critical acclaim from underground rock press for their 1991 debut album, produced by Kim Gordon, while their second release, Live Through This (1994), was met with critical accolades and multi-platinum sales.
In 1995, Love returned to acting, earning a Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance as Althea Leasure in Miloš Forman's The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), which established her as a mainstream actress.
The following year, Hole's third album, Celebrity Skin (1998), was nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Love continued to work as an actress into the early 2000s, appearing in big-budget pictures such as Man on the Moon (1999) and Trapped (2002), before releasing her first solo album, America's Sweetheart, in 2004.
The next several years were marked by publicity surrounding Love's legal troubles and drug relapse, which resulted in a mandatory lockdown rehabilitation sentence in 2005, while she was writing a second solo album.
That project became Nobody's Daughter, released in 2010 as a Hole album but without the former Hole lineup.
Between 2014 and 2015, Love released two solo singles and returned to acting in the network series Sons of Anarchy and Empire.
In 2020, she confirmed she was in the process of writing new music.

  • Honors - In 2020, NME named her "one of the most influential singers in alternative culture of the last 30 years".

  • Writing - Love has also been active as a writer; she co-created and co-wrote three volumes of a manga, Princess Ai, between 2004 and 2006, and wrote a memoir, Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love (2006).

  • Trivia - Love's godfather is the founding Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.

  • Legal Troubles - In 1995, Courtney was charged with assault for punching musician Kathleen Hanna at Lollapalooza, and she was arrested for disrupting flights in 1995 and 2003, resulting in Love being banned from Virgin Airlines.
Also in 2003, she was arrested for breaking windows at boyfriend James Barber's house while under the influence of drugs, and she was arrested for hitting a fan with a microphone stand during a 2004 concert.
In 2018, she was sued by Isaiah Silva, her daughter's ex-husband, for allegedly ordering his kidnapping and attempted murder.

  • Personal life - Love's marriage to James Moreland in 1989 (vocalist of The Leaving Trains) was brief, ending in an annulment.
After forming Hole, she and bandmate Eric Erlandson had a romantic relationship that lasted over a year.
Love briefly dated Billy Corgan of the rock band the Smashing Pumpkins before formally dating Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
In 1990, Love and Cobain first met, and were officially a couple by the close of 1991.
Love married Cobain on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 24, 1992.
In the year prior, Love and Cobain had developed a heroin addiction.
On August 18, 1993, the couple's only child, a daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, was born in Los Angeles.
On September 8, 1993, Love and Cobain made their only public performance together at the Rock Against Rape benefit in Hollywood.
On April 8, 1994, Cobain died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the Seattle home he shared with Love, who was in rehab in Los Angeles at the time.
The remains of Cobain were cremated and his ashes divided into portions by Love, who kept some in a teddy bear and some in an urn.
Love has been engaged to Edward Norton from 1996 to 1998.
She temporarily lost custody of her daughter after a 2003 drug possession charge, and after several stints in rehab, Love announced that she was celebrating 18 months of sobriety while accepting an Icon Award at the NME Awards ceremony in February 2020.

Cocaine is like really evil coffee. (What she told her daughter about drugs.)

You're no one in the rock industry unless you've feuded with me or slept with Winona Ryder.

Knowing me, I'd probably end up at a bar, asking some guy to get me another martini. Still bleaching my hair at 59.

If I write a song about being a teenage prostitute, that doesn't mean that I was a teenage prostitute, any more than it means Kurt raped Polly.

Drugs have nothing to do with the creation of music. In fact, they are dumb and self indulgent. Kind of like sucking your thumb.

I am just the classic person who wants to learn stuff. I want good tutors, and with Kurt I had the best.

I wanted to be something when I grew up, and I grew up in the '70s. What was I gonna be, a movie star? Movie stars say other people's words. A writer- I'm undisciplined. A rock star- that's what I wanted to be when I was a kid.

I'm not a woman, I'm a force of nature.

If you treat a girl like a dog, she's going to piss on you.
