Who was Amie Harwick? / Facts

  • Education and career as a therapist - Amie was a brilliant and skilled psychotherapist and licensed marriage, family and sex therapist from Hollywood.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California Polytechnic University in Pomona, California in 2006.
In 2011 she obtained her Masters of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University.
Amie then went on to receive her Doctorate of Human Sexuality from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality.
She was a member of AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists), CAMFT (California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists), PSI CHI (Psychology Honor Society, Pepperdine Chapter), KAP (Kink Aware Professionals through the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom).
Amie has worked with a variety of populations of clients in a variety of settings ranging from a private practice to community based mental health facilities. She has worked with a range of clients including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, sexually exploited teenagers, juvenile sex offenders, children with trauma, court-mandated adults, divorce, sexual identity issues, chronic pain, sex addiction, Bipolar disorder, displaced adolescents, and domestic violence.
She has received the Phillips Graduate Institute stipend award for her multicultural knowledge and awareness regarding displaced children.
  • Fitness - Prior to working as a therapist, Amie was a Fitness Director for Bally Total Fitness in which she managed and created fitness programs. In addition, she has produced and distributed her own workout video (“Fit Rock”) and worked as a fitness expert on the Discovery Channel.
She was a former model and Playboy centerfold.
  • TV appearances - Amie appeared as an expert on the documentary “Addicted to Sexting,” in 2015.
  • Writing - She authored The New Sex Bible for Women: The Complete Guide to Sexual Self-Awareness and Intimacy.
  • Personal life - Amie gained limelight after she dated and got engaged to comedian and actor, Drew Carey, in 2018.
The couple secretly dated until they made their relationship public in July 2017, and got engaged in February 2018.
However, they never married, ending their engagement in November 2018.
Amie previously dated Gareth Pursehouse, a software developer, engineer, architect and photographer, who's now 41.
They were dating around 2007 and 2008, but then she got a restraining order against Gareth.
Amie had repeatedly accused him of stalking her and sought twice restraining orders against him.
“He has suffocated me, punched me, slammed my head on the ground, kicked me. This has resulted in bruises, inability to walk, bleeding, broken blood vessels around face, whiplash, sore neck and back,” she wrote, according to a report.
None of the 2 restraining orders were active at the time of her death, the last one expiring 2 weeks ago.
  • Death - She was found dead at her home in Hollywood Hills. Her ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse was arrested as a suspect.
  • Police investigation and details on the murder - The Los Angeles Police Department’s West Bureau Homicide released details about Dr. Amie’s death on Sunday, February 16. The suspect (former boyfriend) has been identified as 41-year-old Gareth Pursehouse, a resident of Playa Del Rey, and was arrested for murder.
On Saturday, February 15, 2020, around 1:16 a.m. Hollywood patrol officers responded to a radio call of a “woman screaming”, in the 2000 block of Mound Street in Hollywood Hills.
When officers arrived, they were met by a roommate who was in the street.  He informed officers that the victim was being assaulted inside of her residence. The roommate had jumped a wall, fleeing the place, and went to neighboring residences to call for help.
When officers went to make entry, they found the victim on the ground beneath a third story balcony. The victim was gravely injured and unresponsive. She suffered significant injuries consistent with a fall.
The Los Angeles Fire Department transported the victim to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Coroner says Amie was strangled before being thrown from balcony.
There was evidence of forced entry into the victim’s home and signs of a struggle inside, cops said.
Around 4.30pm Saturday, Gareth Pursehouse was arrested outside of a home in Playa Del Rey.
  • Alleged killer charged with murder - The obsessed ex, Gareth Pursehouse, 41, accused of killing Amie was re-arrested just hours after being freed on bond, and hit with charges that could make him eligible for the death penalty, according to prosecutors.
The alleged stalker had been released Tuesday night after posting $2 million bond on a charge accusing him of throwing sex therapist Amie Harwick, 38, off a balcony at her Hollywood Hills home.
His freedom was short-lived, however, and he was re-arrested Wednesday on a no-bail warrant, and charged with murder as well as first-degree residential burglary with the special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, making him eligible for the death penalty.
  • Sparking social debate over domestic violance - Amie's death has sparked conversations against domestic violence and stalking.
Although Amie's accused murderer is behind bars, the case is raising questions about the effectiveness of laws, intended to protect victims of stalking from violence. Most often, those victims are women.
