What is the meaning of Coldplay’s song “Up and Up”?

Never lose hope

  • underneath the storm an umbrella is saying
  • sitting with the poison takes away the pain
  • up and up, up and up it’s saying
  • lying in the gutter, aiming for the moon
  • trying to empty out the ocean with a spoon
  • up and up, up and up

Togetherness

– a term that is over-used by Chris Martin in all his interviews

  • we’re going to get it get it together right now
  • going to get it get it together somehow
  • going to get it get it together and flower

A new perspective on how we see things

  • yes I want to grow yes I want to feel
  • yes I want to know show me how to heal it up
  • heal it up

.. and what we choose

  • and you can say what is, or fight for it
  • close your mind or take a risk
  • you can say it’s mine and clench your fist
  • or see each sunrise as a gift

the video is self-explanatory for that, I love it

Love

of course that in the end it all reduces to four letters. LIFE. LOVE.

Coldplay are the best in combining:

– simplicity of message

– mass / commercial songs

– positive attitude

I love the metahpor from the beginning that is resumed in the end.

“fixing up a car to drive in it again”

When you’re in painwhen you think you’ve had enough, don’t ever give up

don’t ever give up

I think that the car might be just yourself. Fix it. Fix you.

Coldplay even have a song called “Fix You”. This time is not about fixing others, but fixing ourselves. You can’t fix others if you cant heal yourself first.

According to Wikipedia, Up&Up video meaning is the following:

“poignant, surrealist montage which alludes to contemporary issues.”

What’s interesting, Beyoncé helped with vocals for this song (she also did it in “Hymn for the weekend”, but she was also in the video. In Up and up she does not show up). Also Noel Gallagher helped with the guitar.

It’s about love and sharing. I especially like this verse:

You can say it’s mine, and clench your fist

Or see each sunrise as a gift

In this matter, the idea is close to John Lennon’s sublime song “Imagine”:

Imagine there’s no countries

It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion, too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world

  • nothing changes until we change ourselves.
  • the world around is beautiful, we just have to change our perceptions
