- Former teacher - Rick taught English, history and Greek mythology at different middle schools in San Francisco and San Antonio, for 15 years. He got St. Mary’s Hall’s first Master Teacher Award for in 2002
- Passion - He loved writing from a very early age, trying to publish short stories when he was a teenager, but he didn't make it at that time. He was the editor of the high school newspaper.
- Greek mythology - As his son, Haley was just as his father, very interested in Greek mythology, Riordan made up the character called Percy Jackson, a 12 year boy who discovers to be the son of Poseidon, the Greek God. He imagined Percy’s expedition to bring back Zeus’s lightning bolt in today's America. He told the story to his son in 3 nights and Haley liked it so much that he begged his father to write it down.
