- Foundation - Its founder, Erling Persson wanted to offer the masses fashionable clothing at low prices and so he opened the first Hennes (meaning "hers" in Swedish) store in Västerås, Sweden, in 1947, that sold clothes for women. He bought apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss in 1968 and the name changed to H&M - Hennes & Mauritz. This way, menswear were also included in the company's range of products
- Worldwide expansion - in 1964 they opened a store in Norway and then followed UK in 1976. In 2000 they started to open shops outside Europe, starting with US, totalizing now over 4,000 stores in 62 countries, with more than 130,000 employees
- Second largest clothing retailer in the world, the first position being held by Inditex, the company that owns Zara. It is listed 459th in Forbes's Biggest Public Companies, with $60.8 billion market capitalization as of May 2016
