What is Gymshark? / Facts
Started in a Birmingham back room - As teenagers Ben Francis and Lewis Morgan created the website gymshark and started selling their handprinted t shirts there. One of them was a washer and one was a pizza delivery guy. They met at University and wanted to open a business selling fitness supplements.
International reach - With products available in most of Europe and offices in the UK, Sweden and Norway.
Youtube was the key - Since the social media didn't have the same reach then, they resorted to Youtube to promote themselves. They state that this had a huge impact on their success.
Outsourced T-Shirts - They used an external provider to make their shirts as they didn't have any money to invest. It was a platform where you could make your own design and sell it online. When somebody bought it, they got a certain margin. They made about 4 pounds per sold t-shirt.
Hard working - They used to do everything by hand and it took ages. At first they spent up to 17 hours per day working on the T-Shirts themselves.
Got it right the first time - It was the first time they had their try at making clothes. Never tried it before but new what they wanted.
Started off with their student loan - As they didn't have any savings put aside for this, they used their student's loan to buy their first printing machine.
Expos - One of the biggest moves they made was to attend various themed expos, such as BodyPower. They took all their money in their bank accounts and booked themselves a spot. They said that it totally paid off as they could introduce their new ideas to lots of people.
Endorsement - They have big names vouching for them or appearing in youtube clips, backing their products. This has helped them a lot with product confidence. And now they are sought for.
Strong feedback shaping products - They always talk about what they are making next, getting the feedback from the market and defining it along the way. They never release a final product out of nowhere.
Next steps - Actual steps actually, as they plan to expand into the footwear scene, a very bold and big investment.
