Who was George Gurdjieff? / Facts
- His birtyear is not really known for sure: it might be 1866, 1872 or 1877, or just somewhere between 1866 and 1877
- His father was Greek and his mother Armenian
- He thinks that "man lives in sleep, and in sleep he dies", meaning that most of us live without consciousness, hypnotic.
- He talks in his writings about the Fourth Way (of Enlightening), the first 3 being the "fakir" way (based on the physical body), the "monk" way (it's about faiths and it's based on "training" the emotional body), and the "yogi" way (that refers to the mental body, that should be trained)
- All 3 ways are good but limit the other two, and Gurdjieff thinks that the Fourth method, that trains all the bodies we have (physical, emotional, mental) is the best
- He also wrote a lot about Centers, Ray of Creation and Self-remembering
- He thought that religion or science can't solve our existential problems, so he developed a discipline called "The Work", referring to "working on oneself" for eliberation
- He had great oratory skills and had a huge self-confidence
- Nowadays, there are lots of "Gurdjieff Foundations" in the world that that promote his teachings
- His most known writing is "All and Everything" (Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson is the 1st part, Meetings with Remarkable Men the 2nd, Life is Real Only Then, When 'I Am' the 3rd (unfinished)
- He composed over 200 musical pieces with Thomas de Hartmann
- He talks in his works about the "Ray of Creation" - it's a diagram that better describes the place of the Earth in the Universe. This diagram has 8 levels, just as a musical octave.

- A man will renounce any pleasures you like but he will not give up his suffering.
- Laughter relieves us of superfluous energy, which, if it remained unused, might become negative, that is, poison. Laughter is the antidote.
- Without struggle, no progress and no result. Every breaking of habit produces a change in the machine.
- Without self knowledge, without understanding the working and functions of his machine, man cannot be free, he cannot govern himself and he will always remain a slave.
- A man can only attain knowledge with the help of those who possess it. This must be understood from the very beginning. One must learn from him who knows.
